What is it about the 90s that gets you at your (norm) core? Could it be Kate Moss, the Saint of cool, the original fashion rebel, and all of her iconic high-fashion minimalism moments? It could be; but dig deeper (any Pinterest pro will tell you the Kate black hole is real) and you might just land on something more precise: the black-and-white Banana Republic ads by Bruce Weber. Kate in a men's rolled-neck sweater, khaki shorts, and a trench coat; or her smiling with two girlfriends while managing to make the '90s man’s go-to of layering a T-shirt-under-a-button up shirt look feminine.
Those moments are truly what Hommegirl fashion dreams are made of. And major props to Banana Republic for being one of the originals to lean into menswear for women. Twenty-five years later, we wanted to see if the timeless look would still hold up with a new crop of kids. We took some of Banana Republic's new men's pieces for a play at the beach with Alana and Eliel, who, like their friends and much of their generation, naturally do not see the boundaries between menswear and womenswear. Have to say, we think that 90s will always be here to stay.
